Throttle Assist eBike Hire @ Pencarrow

Can't pedal, or can't be bothered? No worries! Our Throttle Assist eBikes have a thumb throttle (as well as the usual pedal assist option), which allows the bike to be used without pedaling on all but the steepest of hills. Simply push the throttle button and away you go.

Keen to double up with a mate? Great! These bikes have a long comfy seat and foot pegs for a rear passenger, and are rated to 180kg of total load.

Limitations

These bikes are great fun, and can take almost anyone almost anywhere on the usual Pencarrow trails. However, everything has its limits, and speed and performance are affected by usage, load weight, riding surface, and wind. There are a couple of steeper sections on the way up to the top lighthouse, where you may find you need to pedal or push the bike, especially if you have a passenger.

180kg total weight limit - for example you'd be fine with one 120kg rider plus a 50kg bag of gear, or two riders one at 90kg and one at 70kg. Two 100kg riders would be too heavy and you'd run the risk of the bike collapsing under use (book a bike each in this case!).

30km / hour speed limit - we voluntarily limit these bikes to keep you and other trail users safe.

20ah battery - this is huge (the largest we've seen on an off-the-shelf ebike!) but riding under throttle only for hours on end, will deplete the battery rapidly. Keep an eye on your battery gauge and make sure you leave at least half your battery for the return leg.

150cm min height restriction - primary rider must be at least 150cm tall to reach the pedals or ground safely in an emergency. Secondary rider just needs to be capable and confident of holding on to the rider in front.

Punctures - trailside repairs are next to impossible on these bikes, and punctures can happen. In this case, we'll drive out to you as soon as we can to bring you back to base, but there may be a bit of a wait.

Timing guide:

• 2 hours - Gives you plenty of time to discover Pencarrow Head's lighthouses and lakes, along with amazing views of Wellington's coastline and the Kaikoura Ranges. An easy ride, suitable for beginners.
• 4 hours - Hoping to check out all the Pencarrow side tracks? Fancy a seaside picnic lunch? Or maybe you’re keen to explore Fitzroy Bay and the SS Paiaka Wreck? A four hour bike hire will ensure you have plenty of time for the adventure of your choice.
• 7 hours - Pack a picnic lunch and make the most of a full day out on this incredible coastline. Explore Eastbourne’s cafes and galleries, before heading out to Pencarrow Head’s lighthouses and lakes, and further around the bay to the SS Paiaka wreck.
